Travelling in Tasmania
Our York Caravan
As we have travelled Australia we have come across fellow travellers that have asked us about taking their caravan to Tasmania. We say go for it! We went to Tasmania at the beginning of the off peak season in May. It is a little cool but it was great to see the autumn colours. We got a good deal by contacting "The Spirit of Tasmania" booking office talking to the very helpful staff and finding out what was available. Don’t forget to ask for your seniors discount. During the off peak season there was only a night time sail from Melbourne to Devonport so we took a cabin and were glad that we did. If we could suggest anything it would be to make sure you have a snack with you in your car because the boarding process can take a while, particularly if you have a big van. Also remember to do the same for the return journey from Devonport. After towing our van onto the ship we went up to our cabin and after getting settled, had some dinner and toured the ship. We even booked our caravan park stay in Latrobe, just outside Devonport, on board the ship. We left Melbourne at 8.00pm and arrived in Devonport at 7.00am after a great trip.
Main Street of Ross
In Tasmania there is so much to see. We spent 5 weeks there and still didn’t see everything. Because we have a 22’6” van we chose to select places as a base and travel around to see what we wanted to see. Our pick of places to go in Tassie would be to travel the heritage trail from Devonport to Hobart and a must see, but not limited to, is the little town of Ross – especially to have their scallop pies – yum. Because it was autumn when we were there the scenery was particularly outstanding. Don’t forget the “Wall in the Wilderness” just outside Derwent Bridge – this is a must do in Tassie. We know that Port Arthur is not for everyone but we thoroughly enjoyed our time there and found it a very serene place. Staying at the Port Arthur Caravan Park was a treat with their fire places on each site and sharing the nightly fire with the local bandicoots even though it was quite cool, but a nice wine helped warm the evening up.
Ross Bridge
The east coast is pretty special as well and you can easily lose track of time while travelling in Tassie. It’s a very special part of Australia and the people there are great and so too is the food.
As we said before make sure you give yourself plenty of time. We met a number of travellers who were trying to see everything in a week – it is just not possible.
Go to Tasmania and enjoy!
